Watkins Glen 07.29.02 - SCCA Regional - July Sprints
Test day Friday
Managed a 2:18.9 by following the eventual winner, Chris Currant. Very strong wind, and otherwise frustrating sessions with Legends and other odd cars in with us.
Qualifying - 2 sessions
Could not break 2:19.6! Traffic, traffic, traffic...and my lack of passing skills. This needs work big time. My friend Peter outqualifies all Racer's Edge cars with a strongly improved 2:19.12.
Race
Raining heavily all morning. I think of cancelling up until the last possible moment; then suit up. We are the first race group. 53 car field, mixed, with 27 srf's. Racers Edge cars qualified 14,15,16, & 17th! This is highly unusual and problematic. Peter 1st, then me, then ron finke, then bob miller (first time in an srf), i think.
We (wrongly) go out with rain tires and sway bars disconnected. Others are on dry's and the time differences are astonishing as the track dried out pretty quickly. Boy does one forget how different the handling of these cars is on rains! Pretty dicey race, with brave moments and scary ones too. But i finished 13th and was very satisfied with this result. Bob was chasing me for laps and put in a better best lap, but didn't catch me. Ron ran strongly; peter had early problems.
