VIR double regional - MAARS/SARRC - 5/11,12/02
VIR is a fabulous track. Good thing we did the test day earlier, because learning this 17 turn 3.24 mi. track on friday would have been daunting. As it was, it was very difficult.
I could not find my rhythm. During the prior test session, i managed a 2:19.2, but i couldn't get anywhere near there. 2:21's.
Tony Marinello had his new SRF, and was obviously enjoying himself, and turning very good times (2:18+). Unfortunately, by the end of Sunday... a visit to the wrecker.
I ended the day somewhat frustrated with the traffic and the times (speaking of traffic, there were over 400 cars at the event; 63 SRF's!).
Saturday qualifying: i tried a lay back in pit lane strategy. NG. I found only one semi-clear lap, a 2:21.2. I came in saying the track just wasn't there, only to find out later that the leaders were doing 2:15+!!!
The race on saturday was in the rain. I ran a pretty intelligent race, but was unfortanately 'taken out' by another car in the snake (turn 6), costing about 6-8 positions.
This was my first rain race. I ran it (as did everyone else) on dry tires, as the race started dry. What a fiasco, with cars everywhere, no grip whatever, and no visibility. A good learning experience, but not fun. Finished 20/58.
What was amazing was that there were no apparent misshaps during the start (an awesome sight)!
Sunday: again, no clear lap for qualifying. Thus, middle of the pack - danger zone. and i got hit during the race in Oak Tree, again costing about 6 positions (more?). finished 30/57.
The results are here http://www.ncrscca.com/Drivers.htm along with a nice narrative and some good photos.
--------------------------
I had fun with two new friends in the Racer's Edge stable: ron finke and andy shobel. Ron is somewhat new to SRF but not to racing. Andy is more experienced and turned in a solid performance on sunday. And the chemistry of the group made for good kidding and fun all around.
I thought a lot about the contact, and what to do about it. Clearly, qualifying in the middle of the pack is a big problem. Second, i need to develop better 'traffic skills'. Turning a good time, and racing, are two very different things.
Next? LRP in July; i've cancelled the June Sprints at Road America. Perhaps next year.
