pebble concours, concorso italiano, hsr @ laguna - 2003
This is our second visit to this fabulous weekend. This year we added the enormously popular Concorso Italiano and our first ever auto auction (RM Auctions).
The Concorso featured Lamborghini this year, but Ferrari's were in heavy attendance. As was the new GT40, later auctioned for charity.
Speaking of the auction, an 860 Monza went for $1.9MM plus commission! We previewed the cars and there was something for everyone, from mini's to 275 GTB/4.
A highlight of the races at Laguna was seeing Phil Hill in a TR chasing C-types. He had his problems in this race, but what a spectacular scene.
A side excursion to Carmel and later, to Pt. Lobos State Reserve proved fun and picturesque (have you ever held a sea urchin?).
We stayed to hear the introduction of the judges at Pebble; quite an impressive lot, though the selection of Chris Bangle was questionable, no? The cars were grand. In particular, i was taken by the Bugatti Type 57 SC of Ralph Lauren (only two in existence; the other was there as well!) purportedly worth >$20MM.
Next year Ferrari is featured, and though i feel i may be done with Pebble for a while, this will be hard to resist. Pics here.
