Cavallino Classic 2002 (how not to spend ~$6000!)

My first Cavallino Classic ever. Unfortunately, not a great report, overall.

Day 1: Wednesday, Moroso, Private Test Day -

My first time at Moroso!  Not a great track. Two long straights and a technical section.  Lot’s of famous people; people with great cars who had run this for years.

First two runs, many questions.  Asked Bill Adam, former TransAm and IMSA winner and world class driver to please accompany me and instruct me.  During lap three, chatter, BANG!, put the car on the grass on the back straight.  Black flagged session (sorry guys).  Gearbox failure. Much fretting.  Bill was super.  Very helpful and supportive, but little could be done.

After much searching for answers, it seemed my weekend was lost, and it turned out to be so.  :(

Day 2: Thursday, Moroso track event -

Went to the track to visit & hang out with the folks etc, and talk to various shops about the transmission and what to do about it.  Enjoyed some good company and picked lot’s of brains on 355 gearboxes!  Not much good to report but had an ok time.

Day 3: Friday, Moroso track event -

The weather turned unbearably cold!  44 degrees!  Rainy, too.  And not at all dressed for it.  Very unpleasant despite the good company and great cars.  This weather made the historic races very difficult, also for the spectators :(

Yacht hop was a bummer due to weather (amazing boats!). Dinner was likewise not worthwhile.

Day 4: Saturday, Breakers, Concours d’Elegance -

Slightly warmer, but still overcast and rainy.  What a fabulous Concours this would have been w/o weather.  Still, we saw the new Enzo!  And some absolutely fabulous cars. And good friends.

This is an expensive event and when you lose your car and the weather turns against you, it’s hard to say that you've had a good time.  Next year?
